Project Details

Description

The Ubuntu Academy was developed as a non-formal education project with the aim of training and educating young people from immigrant communities in Portugal in leadership skills. Conceptualised based on references from African culture – Ubuntu – and the example set by great figures such as Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King and Desmond Tutu, the first edition of this project took place in 2010-2011 and the second in 2012-2013.

The completion of the third edition of the Ubuntu Academy made it pertinent to evaluate the long-term impact of this project, both on the participants and on the surrounding community, with the objectives of continuously improving the Ubuntu training process and sharing the good practices resulting from this experience with the academic community and society.

Thus, this project aims to:
-Document changes in the lives of participants after the completion of the two editions of the Ubuntu Academy;
-Understand if and how this project contributed to the changes observed, identifying elements of the Academy with the greatest impact;
-Understand how the Ubuntu Academy can be improved.

The work was developed by Patrícia Dias and Inês Teixeira-Botelho.
