Description
The project to write and publish a brochure on ‘The National Heritage of São Tomé and Príncipe’ originated from a research project carried out by CEPCEP and the Ministry of Education and Culture of that country with the aim of producing an ‘History of São Tomé and Príncipe’ that was unbiased, up to date and methodologically correct, intended to serve as a manual and reference text for teaching the national history of this country.
Bearing in mind that, on the one hand, most of the archives relating to historical heritage are in Portugal and, on the other hand, the leading experts on natural heritage are both Portuguese and African working in Portuguese scientific institutions, CEPCEP proposed to the Ministry of Education and Culture of São Tomé and Príncipe to carry out, with its agreement, the preparation of a book on ‘The National Heritage of São Tomé and Príncipe’, providing as up-to-date and complete a survey as possible of the natural, historical and cultural riches, highlighting the dangers that threaten them and attempting to set out concrete proposals for their safeguarding.
The project was developed by Artur Teodoro de Matos, José Mendes Ferrão and Inácio Guerreiro.
