Pós-doc » The baptismal rite in the Byzantine liturgy: theological and practical implications

Project Details

Description

Corresponds to the post-doctoral project in the History of Eastern Liturgies and Sacramental Theology of Doctor Pedro Mihail Pruteanu, hosted at the Centre for Studies in Religious History (UCP-CEHR).

Layman's description

The byzantine baptismal liturgy was studied in the East as well as in the West, but the main liturgical syntheses of that research are quite over dated and incomplete, the more relevant dating back to the end of the XIXth century. In addition, there are still no conclusive studies on two important issues that although, in relation to the roman rite, were intensely discussed at the 2nd Vatican Council, have not been untill now a subject for a critical analysis regarding the byzantine rite: a) To which point do the liturgical texts from the baptismal liturgy correspond and reflect the orthodox sacramental theology of Baptism? b) Is it necessary and possible to review certain texts or baptismal rites and its additionals so that they would correspond and reflect more clearly the orthodox theology and its pastoral application? This post-doctoral project aims to research these questions and come up with concrete answers and proposals to fill this gap in the Byzantine rite.
