Production and circulation of the Bible in Portugal: itineraries of Romanesque illuminated manuscripts

Project Details

Description

The illuminated Bibles of the Romanesque period preserved in Portuguese institutions remain very important manuscripts. In addition to their religious dimension as a sacred book, they are also works of unquestionable cultural and artistic interest. This is a cultural heritage of particular significance that has justified its study throughout the ages. The aim is to make these codices known, to emphasise their importance from different perspectives, highlighting the production and circulation of texts and artistic models, as well as the uses given to them by the monastic communities to which they belonged. To this end, the planned initiatives are an exhibition, a colloquium and the production of a catalogue, all with titles identical to those of the project.
