TheUniversidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP), through the Centre for the Study of Portuguese-speaking Peoples and Cultures (CEPCEP), and Columbia University (CU) in New York (USA), through its International School of Public Management, have formed a partnership to document and map the ecology of innovation, transformation, and public, business, and civic participation and collaboration in the urban areas of New York and Portugal. More specifically, the case studies produced were based on smart city initiatives identified in Lisbon, Cascais, Fundão and Mafra.

The edition of the work with the various cases studied in Portugal was published in book form, in English, in September 2022, edited by Universidade Católica Editora.
