Project Details
Description
The SMARTI project launched at the beginning of 2021 starts showing results. This project aims to reformulate master's and doctoral programs using the English language as a means of training in non-linguistic courses (for example: science, mathematics, medicine, information technology, among others) in Armenia and Russia.
The Faculty of Biotechnology - UCP is co-coordinator of work package 1 of SMARTI, which aims to identify the problems arising during the implementation of the project to promote modernization, internationalization and improve the training of teachers in partner countries in the area of teaching through the English language. This work package began with a literature review and field review study on practices in the use of the English language as a means of training and student-centered methodologies in Armenia and Russia. The results that are presented refer to the practices of Internationalization of Higher Education Institutions in Armenia.
In 2005, Armenia joined the Bologna Process and since then intensive education reforms have been carried out in all Armenian universities. These reforms aim to integrate the University into the European Higher Education Area. Education is based on the fundamental principles of the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System.
The internationalization experiences of Armenian universities are quite diverse. Consider the case of (VSU), Public Administration Academy of the Republic of Armenia (PAARA), Mikayel Nalbandyan State University of Shirak (SUSh), Goris State University (GSU) and Armenian National Agrarian University (ANAU).
VSU cooperates closely with more than 25 higher education institutions in Europe and post-Soviet countries. Since 2013, several investments have been made to improve the level of higher education at VSU. As a result, five Tempus mobility projects (LeAGUe, SSRULLI, VERITAS, MAHATMA and GOVERN) and four Erasmus Mundus were implemented. Due to the Tempus projects, the University underwent several structural changes and the Erasmus Mundus and Erasmus + mobility projects gave VSU students and employees the opportunity to acquire European teaching and learning experience. From 2017 to 2020, VSU was involved in the Erasmus + BOOST capacity development strategy and marketing project, which allowed for the improvement of its strategic internationalization planning. Since 2018, due to the involvement of the VSU team in the Erasmus + PRINTeL project (Classroom Change: Promoting Innovative Teaching and Learning to Improve Students' Learning Experience) many faculty members have been trained and passed on their knowledge and experience to many internal and external VSU stakeholders.
PAARA developed its Internationalization Concept in line with the Strategic Plan 2019-2024 which in turn complies with the Government of Armenia Program in terms of internationalization of higher education and the Armenian research field. The Concept, as well as the 2019-2024 Strategic Plan, stipulates the offer of several professional courses in English. In addition, international accreditation of at least one specialty (MPA or MBA) is also provided for in the documents above; therefore, steps are being taken to transmute relevant programs of study into programs taught in English.
In the case of SUSh, it has participated in the Tempus, Erasmus Mundus and Erasmus + programs since 1996. Within the scope of the BOOST project (2016-2020), 5 regulations and procedures were developed and approved by SUSh (Regulation of the Center for External Cooperation and Relations - Public Relations, Public Relations Procedure, Academic Mobility Procedure, SUSh Marketing Strategy Concept, Science and Research Internationalization Policy).
In accordance with its Strategic Development Plan, GSU has been actively working to conclude agreements and memoranda of understanding with local and international universities, institutions, and organizations, participating in the preparation of draft proposals for EU-funded KA1 and KA2 projects, organized in English language training courses for its teaching and administrative staff, it has been a member of the consortium of several Tempus and Erasmus+ projects.
Finally, the ANAU in the field of international cooperation adopted, to bring the university to international recognition, the integration in international higher education, the policy of providing research and consulting services. During the last few years, ANAU has been actively involved in several international projects. During this period, ANAU was involved in 4 Tempus programs (GOVERN, ARMENQA, SuToMa, LeAGUe) and 3 Erasmus Mundus programs (ELECTRA, EFFORT, EMBER). ANAU has 38 ongoing agreements within the scope of Erasmus + KA1, 4 Erasmus + KA2 projects in progress (SMARTI, GEOTAK, ABIONET, TOPAS). In total, ANAU cooperates with around 100 international organizations.
These results are important for the continuation of the project regarding the development of a comprehensive training and competence model for those responsible for university teaching programs and a multidisciplinary training program for teachers from an international perspective.
