Description
Marcos António da Fonseca Portugal (Lisbon, 1762 - Rio de Janeiro, 1830) is undoubtedly the Portuguese composer who wrote the most operas and also the one who achieved the greatest worldwide success.
In fact, as far as we know today, Marcos Portugal wrote 86 dramatic works - serious and comic operas, burlesques, farces and scenic cantatas. More than half of these works were performed thousands of times in theatres across Europe and Brazil. At one point, he was the most famous opera composer of his time.
The project consisted of organising a bibliography and discography on Marcos Portugal and his work. The study was carried out by maestro Manuel Ivo Cruz and was published in the magazine ‘Povos e Culturas’ (Peoples and Cultures), no. 3, edited by CEPCEP.
