Abstract
Abstract: The following chapter is divided into two sections. The first part discusses traditions, surprises, and translations with which Europe in the early modern period exposed itself to experiences beyond known borders and concepts, analyzing texts referring to the Portuguese overseas travels that met with widespread interest in Germany. In a second step, using the example of Columbus’ letter and introducing the concept of intramental translations, an attempt is made to describe the complex steps in which the old conceived a new world.
