Abstract

This thesis aims to generally compare the behavior of two banks in the context of ethics in management by objectives, namely Banco Espírito Santo (now Novo Banco) and Crédito Agrícola. The subject was discussed in the context of organizational management, framing it in the crisis that affected the world economic and financial system in 2007/9 with more focus on the banking crisis in Portugal, taking into account the possible reasons for the BES went bankrupt and the Crédito Agrícola persevered, as well as developing similar activities. This study focuses on giving more prominence to the ethics of responsibility and ethics of happiness as a way to help companies and organizations, in general, to become sustainable in the long-term. In addition, the study presents the Management by Objectives System as an method for motivating employees in their performance and thereby contributing to greater organizational performance. One of the major findings of the study was the fact that despite the BES being seen by many as a failure in terms of management and ethical behavior, and Crédito Agrícola as a success in the exercise of their activity among customers of both banks surveyed, BES customers were those who had more confidence in the institution.
