Abstract

China is one of the countries which most attrac-ted European attention in the 17th and 18th cen-tury. The first travellers expressed surprise and admiration at a society of great wealth, riches and police. The image drawn of Asian society and culture was a present topic in European knowledge networks, especially in Germany, which has always shown great interest in appropriating news and knowledge about “new worlds”. This article therefore addresses the importance that China played in Germany’s publishing sec-tor, trying to show which (kind of) works on China were printed in Germany in the 17th century. What role did the publisher play in the construction and dissemination of travel accounts? What networks and groups of cultural agents were interested in news and images about China? That the printing industry in Europe had great influence on the representation of China is well known. However, it is important to find out what iconographic forms and media were created in German book centres. Travellers’ accounts such as those of the Portuguese, among others, were published in editions of great artistic and cultu-ral merit, which allows to understand the role of this mediation.
