Abstract
The problematic of arts and architecture in the mediation of the sacred knows a significant quarrel in France, in the years 1950-1951 when, for the first time, modern art enters into the churches. The quarrel reveals a latent and persisting crisis in Christian sacred art, when one moves from the context of a culture unified by Christian religion to the context of a secularized and pluralistic culture. Can sacred art fulfill its religious function on the margins of the most creative artistic currents of its own time? The reflection of the directors of the French magazine L’Art Sacré and the German-American theologian Paul Tillich helps us to conceive a religious dimension and a sacramental dimension of the profane art, revealing the vitality of a Christian community in dialo- gue with the spiritual adventure of his time.
