Abstract

This paper takes the perspective of the comparative method used in Anthropology, aiming to discuss the relevance of the Marcel Mauss thesis (1923–1924), expounded in the well- known “Essai sur le Don”, in the context of contemporary globalized societies. In these societies, the so – called ‘Third Sector’ or ‘Non-profitable Sector’ circulates goods and services as forms of sui generis gifts in networks of solidarity made up of anonymous people. It therefore appears that the three obligations of giving, receiving and rewarding of archaic societies studied by Mauss are remote from us. Can this be so?
