Abstract

After having addressed in the first paper - Ad limina 2 (2011) -, the beginning and development of the worship of Saint James in Portugal followed by intensive pilgrimage, we now approach the legendary of Saint James and its roots in pagan religion, as well as its Christianization in a troubled political, social and ecclesiastical time. Santiago in Portuguese folklore? We will also speak of the legendary of Saint James in Portuguese folk tradition, and of the rise and fall of pilgrimage to Compostela, as well as of the corruption of the worship of Saint James. Portugal was born hailing Saint James. That is why in Portugal, in the iconography, literature, proverbs, heraldry, place names, all over folk memory, Santiago is always close.
