Abstract

In the Hebrew Bible and in the New Testament, the so-called “old age” takes on a prominent place. With a diverse vocabulary, the Holy Scripture presents the place of the elders according to their maturity and contribution to the community, and not according to the age phase after childhood, youth and adulthood. The elders are part of the society of Israel, although with different functions. Their status is not seen in pragmatic or utilitarian terms, so they are not set aside or deposited in institutions or spaces outside the family, as they integrate and complete it. Unseen as a burden, they become a source of wisdom, witnessed not only by wisdom literature. This experience cuts across the entire biblical text and the surrounding culture in its apocryphal plurality.
