Abstract
In addition to a well-grounded interest in China and its past, an increasing attention is nowadays being paid to the Chinese historiography. Using two recent books on the writing of history in China as a starting point, this essay seeks to observe how historians, who have practiced their craft there since the first decades of the twentieth century, have incorporated foreign ideas and discourses about history into an ancient historiographical tradition. Prominence is given to the historian who, immersed in his time, has to deal with the choices that such a time suggests or imposes on his historical writing.
