Abstract
The expedition led by Fernão de Magalhães on behalf of the Spanish crown represented a decisive milestone, not only in economic terms, but also in terms of knowledge about the oceans, fauna and flora. This essay seeks to address the contribution of Magalhães-Elcano’s voyage in the quest for spices. Taking European literature concerning the expedition and its repercussions into special consideration, with a particular focus on the reception by the Holy Roman-Germanic Empire, based on different sources, such as travel reports, chronicles and maps, we aim to define how knowledge of the natural Indian world benefited from the Magellanic expedition to build a new body of botanical knowledge.
