Abstract
In the late 80’s, the Portuguese democracy was already a certainty. The official discourse extolled the virtues of the political rulers and the majorities obtained by the PSD and its leader, Cavaco Silva, proved the confidence of voters. However, this scenario was disturbed when the weekly newspaper O Independente reported that the Finance Minister, Miguel Cadilhe, had harmed the State in a real estate business, casting suspicion on the (virtuous) cavaquista governance.
Analyzing how this scandal has been built in the pages of O Independente, this paper will reflect on the role of political media scandals in democratic societies, in particular in the Portuguese society over the last twenty years.
