Abstract
As Ecclesiastical Counselor of the Legation of Portugal to the Holy See (1930-1944), Monsignor José de Castro took maximum advantage of the roman archives, materializing an appreciable survey and systematization of sources about events and figures that made Portugal remarkable in Rome and in the world. From these efforts resulted, among other works, Portugal em Roma (1939), a landmark in the bibliographical work of the priest, diplomat, journalist and researcher of Trás-os-Montes. With emphasis on unedited correspondence, and in the 80 years since the publication of the work, this article traces its motivation and the context, evokes the great celebrations of the centenaries of independence, as well the negotiations for the signing of the Concordat and the Missionary Agreement between the portuguese State and the Holy See.
