Abstract

In the XXI century, libraries have been understood, in theory, as librarian managed spaces, as community-based spaces and where facilitation and knowledge creation are promoted. However, it is necessary to understand whether, in practice, new theoretical proposals in the field of librarianship are developed and applied. In this sense, this work intends to discover and study, in the context of portuguese public libraries, these new ways of approach, to evaluate the potential of libraries and librarians and their capacity to do good and improve society. The theoretical framework of this internship report focuses on the theoretical proposals that gave rise to the concept of «new librarianship», created by R. David Lankes. In the same line of thought, other foreign and portuguese authors who have addressed similar themes will also be considered. This study seeks to understand the circulation of ideas, theories and practices in Information Science through the observation of the daily life of the public library Orlando Ribeiro, located in the neighborhood of Telheiras, in Lisbon, and element of the BLX network. In the end, it will be tried to find out if the «new librarianship» is or can be adjusted to the public library Orlando Ribeiro and to the portuguese reality.
