Abstract

The European institutions have adopted joint conclusions with common public policy and legislative goals for the 2020- 2024 cycle to capitalise on the climate and digital transformations and to make the European union more resilient and autonomous. one of the commission’s priorities arising from the legislative trilogue is the review of the European digital identity to allow citizens to have only one virtual identification when accessing goods and services, while restoring control over the disclosure of personal data. this paper gives an account of the main changes comprised in the 2021 proposal to amend Regulation (EU) no 910/2014, on the European framework for the digital identity. it is a first approach, at a time when there is still limited doctrinal debate and it is not yet possible to gauge the effects of these modifications on the internal market. it seems pertinent, nevertheless, to make this development known, especially for the potential impact on the lives of users.
