Abstract
This paper studies the institution of the State of the First Portuguese Republic (October 1910-May 1926). We begin with a dimension often marginalized: the relationship between the Portuguese Republic and the foreign political organizations, in particular England. We'll look at the functioning of State institutions of the 1st Republic, then examine the relationship between the state and estate people. The conclusions will focus on the problem so often described as the strength of the State.
