Abstract
This text examines the phenomenon of privatization in education and the quality of privately managed education in order to question, in the first instance, the a priori attribution of quality standards to private education in the wider context of the neo-liberal policies which have been applied to education. Secondly, these issues are examined in the specific Portuguese context, and in particular we look at some current attempts to apply the concept of excellence, traditionally allocated to public education, in favour of private education. The article concludes with an analysis of the privatization of quality and its implications in terms of "privation" of rights.
