Abstract
The text deals with a devotional movement initiated by the communication of a private revelation by a farmer to his neighbours in Escariz (Arouca), in 1924, which originated a sanctuary and an annual pilgrimage. Among other aspects, we address: the conflicts between the local population and ecclesiastical authorities within the legitimacy and control of the sanctuary and the church; the involvement of ecclesiastical, civil and judicial authorities; the influence of other cases; some phenomena of religious syncretism; and the role of the Press as a stage for publicity and debate.
