A universidade medieval portuguesa e os problemas do seu financiamento [II]: os conflitos entre studiume Igreja durante o século XIV

This paper aims to understand the funding of the Portuguese medieval university during the fourteenth century, revealing the growing conflict between studium and church, related with the allocation of revenues from several ecclesiastical benefices - which had been the main source of university funding since the foundation of the Portuguese studium generale, in the last years of the twelfth century. In addition, I will also try to analyse, on the one hand, the impact of the relocations of the university between the cities of Lisbon and Coimbra and, on the other hand, how the constant change of the churches designated by the Portuguese Crown to fund the magistri and the studium itself led to a emergent conflict between these two institutions, both ecclesiastical in their nature - the Church and the studium.
