Abstract

If we look at the history of humanity, we can see that the definition and acceptance of violence within society has fluctuated depending on the time and culture under consideration. However, it has increased and affects workers carrying out their professional tasks. This study aims to understand whether violence is a prevalent reality. Recognizing the most common types of violence, knowing the consequences that violence has for professionals exposed to it, and determining what mitigating measures are being applied. A literature review was therefore undertaken and research carried out between 1990 and 2020, but no articles were found for the period 1990 to 1997. The following databases were searched: b-ON, PubMed® and google scholar and 31 articles were selected for analysis. We analysed the studies published between 1998 and 2020 that focused on pre-hospital violence against health professionals. The studies in question show that violence is a current psychosocial risk and requires efficient intervention. It is an evolving phenomenon that has short/long-term consequences for the well-being of the professional and for their performance in the institution. This naturally has repercussions for the institution itself and inevitably for the national economy.
