Abstract
This article discusses the impact of austerity measures on the welfare state and the rise of poverty, inequalities and unemployment in southern European countries, which have been promoting a clear “violation” of human rights. This approach is part of the commitment of social workers to promote social justice and human rights, in this way its important to note the perspective of the three traditions of human rights, as well as social rights as a second generation of human rights, based in the legal and social state obligations for the full participation of the citizen in the society. It is proposed alternatives that respect human rights and promote the welfare of citizens.
