Abstract
In this thesis I argue that Adélia Prado’s poetry is a hieroglyphic poetry, following the implications of what the author said in an interview: “quando eu falo poesia, poema, é a pintura.” (Prado 2014). In the first chapter, I argue that the relationship that Prado makes between the pictorial and the poetic genres is due to the fact that they produce a similar effect, they convey an experience of “concreteness”. In this chapter, the religious foundations of Prado’s poetry will also become evident. In the second chapter, I circumscribe the relationship between the two artistic genres by comparing the poetic work of Prado to the pictorial work of the genre of Rhopography. In the third chapter, I explore the limits of such comparison, and the limits of the relationship between the poetic and pictorial genre in Prado’s own conception. In the last chapter, I describe the poetic work of Prado as being a hieroglyphic poetry, a kind of poetry that is painting, and which establishes a relation between poetic writing and the divine, as a gateway to eternity.
