Abstract

In the last few years, family has been suffering significant changes, which result in a greater probability of several family generations coexisting and living together. As a consequence, intergenerational relationships, namelly between grandparent and grandchild, are gaining relevance in both national and international research. This investigation is intended to adapt the Escala de Significados da Grã-Parentalidade grandparent version – ESGP-A – (Triadó & Villar, 2000) to the Portuguese population. 294 grandparents took part of the study, with ages between 52 and 90. The global Cronbach’s alpha value is .85, ranging from .62 to .88 on the respective five subscales, with a total of 27 items and with a 53.2% global variance. The scale’s psychometric qualities, deemed acceptable, point out an instrument with potential in Portugal. It is intended, in future developments, to improve the Cronbach’s alpha values under .70, adding new items, also aiming to improve variance values. In spite of the differences found on the subscales item organization, the original conceptual coherence is preserved. The differences between the adapted and the original scales are discussed and the adapted scale limitations are pondered, pointing out future developments.
