Abstract

When teams need to adapt in a context of extreme time scarcity, they may either paralyze, maintain the previous plan, or improvise a new plan. The latter phenomenon consists of improvised team adaptation. Being a recent concept, little is known about how teams can adapt effectively in times of need, and how they can produce knowledge from these processes. In this conceptual article, we develop a theoretical model, based on a temporal flow, contributing to a better understanding of improvised adaptation. We propose a set of temporal influence factors, moderators of the response to contingent triggers, and a set of team processes, fundamental for the effectiveness of improvised adaptation. We also propose that team reflexivity mediates the relationship between improvised adaptation and learning. By exploring the temporal flow of team-improvised adaptation, we extend the literature of improvisation and adaptation, increasing the granularity of the constructs, widening its nomological network.
