Abstract

Hand hygiene (HM) is considered the simplest measure in the prevention and control of hospital infection, which is one that causes greater difficulty in adherence in health professionals. The aim of this study was to improve the adherence rate of health professionals to hand hygiene, thus contributing to the improvement of good practices. A descriptive, exploratory, mixed approach study was carried out using the questionnaire as a method of data collection. Observation to the multidisciplinary team (nurses, doctors and operational assistants) of a surgery service of a public hospital in Lisbon. The data were collected in May and June 2016. The results showed a low rate of adherence to hand hygiene, and it can be concluded that there is a need to create incentive strategies and moments of reflection that stimulate and enable professionals to the importance of its role in the prevention of hospital infections, thus contributing to patient safety.
