Abstract

Adoption, an ancient practice in the history of many cultures, involves fundamental dimensions of human experience - the desire and the need to belong and the formation of family ties in the absence of blood relationship. In this exploratory phenomenological study we explored the experiencies, needs, problems and support received by adoptive parents after the adoption process using the structured interview “Stories about adoption.” After accepting the inability to bear a child, the path to foster parenting begins with positive expectations and culminates in a positive way with the arrival of the child who realizes the dream of parenthood. However this process is also marked by various difficulties and feelings of frustration and disappointment with the support (not) received. From the results of national and international literature, we intend to reflect on the needs of adoptive parents during and after the adoption, comparing them with existing institutional responses.
