Abstract
This article presents the modus operandi of “Pago em Lixo”, a project created by the Parish Council of Campolide (pfc), in Lisbon, which implemented a local currency, Lixo, with the aim of involving the community in the separation of waste. One analyzes the motivations that are in its genesis. Data collected in a semi-directive interview with the President of the pfc, shows that the main motivation of the pfc is economic: to strengthen trade and the local economy, and reduce the financial burden on street cleaning, but also encourages residents to perform behaviors of greater civic awareness, which reflects ersatz morality.
