Abstract

Joana Patrão’s exhibition book Arboroscene: Reflections on Decay, curated by Denise Wieslhuber, Joana Flor Rato and Jeanne Pasquet, shares her intimate contemplation of a decaying apple tree through a series of photographs, textures and drawings closely related to the ideas of growth, change and metamorphosis. The artist takes up the role of a mediator between human and non- human. As we turn, fold and unfold pages, the tree unveils itself as the axis of the world, a cosmic being, moving through the different elements and time. As a visual artist and interdisciplinary researcher, Joana Patrão focuses on the concept of landscapes as experiences. Nature transgresses from its traditional position as a passive object of art and becomes an agent in the creative process.
