    Abstract

If, in the Plautine comedy, the courtesan is almost always depicted as the mala meretrix, in Terence she distances from her traditional character and is presented in a different way. Through the analysis of each one of Terence's courtesans, this study aims to show that most of them do not worry about having a safe future. Through a noble and generous behaviour, and, sometimes with a disenchanted and deep understanding of human suffering, as a result from their long experience of distress, they also aim to rehabilitate their image in order to deserve other people's respect and esteem.
