Abstract
Between 1878 and 1915, “O Ocidente” magazine was one of the most important vehicles for the dissemination of the ancient and coeval Portuguese silver. The multiple gifts to the heroe of those times, huge tableware or diplomatic gifts, are reported in this periodical. Through drawings and also photographs of objects, publishes a set of very important elements for knowledge of jewellery establishments such as Leitão & Irmão, Reis Filhos, or others silversmiths. The presence of Portuguese silver and jewellery in international exhibitions, such as the one occurred at Rio de Janeiro (1879), provided an opportunity to exalt this Portuguese art and the permanence of tradition, in a time when the trend for industrialization threatened the quality of Portuguese silver. Goldsmithing and jewellery are referenced, direct or indirectly, in the pages of this periodical publication, including the jewelry sold in the auction of Maria Pia in 1911.
