Abstract

The study was carried out with the objective of evaluating the impact of self-assessment in improving the quality of teaching, research and extension at a university in the province of Tete-Mozambique. A single case study was defined, with a qualitative approach. Data were collected through interviews, document analysis, direct observation and inquiry and were discussed in light of the triangulation of sources and the theoretical framework. The results were presented by thematic categories. It was concluded that the self-assessment of quality generates few contributions to the improvement of the HEI, with the few existing ones concentrated in teaching and almost insignificant for research and non-existent for extension, the fact is motivated, among other reasons, by the discontinuous realization of the self-assessment at the institution, that is, it only occurs when the HEI intends to submit a course for accreditation. It is recommended that the HEIs should develop their own instruments, based on the CNAQ documents, consisting of criteria that effectively promote and evaluate the improvement of the quality of teaching, research and extension and subsequent promotion of the culture of continuous self-assessment.
