Abstract

When studying self-portraits in poetry, one of the most relevant aspects is the research of meanings of the word “self-portrait” and of the ways in which the word is presented in poetic works. This article reflects on the meanings contemplated in the dictionary definition of the term, while exploring the history of self-portraiture. It is possible to confirm that, in line with an ancient tradition, it is in the 20th century that the word “self-portrait” begins and expands its presence in Portuguese and Portuguese-language poetry, at the same time it appears in the dictionary.
