It is against this background that comes this study aimed to characterize the levels of welfare of nurses sample from North Lisbon Hospital / Hospital of Santa Maria, as well as identifying their levels of anxiety and depression.Participated n = 173 nurses, 146 female and 27 male, aged between 23 and 59 years (M = 34.79, SD = 8,683). They evaluated some of the effects associated with shift work at the level of health / well-being and family and social life as well as changes in the emotional and depressive state.Data were collected through a questionnaire prepared for this purpose, the "Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale" / Anxiety Scale and Hospital Depression and the "Personal Wellbeing Índix / Wellness Personal Scale, both validated for the Portuguese population. The results suggest there are no significant differences in welfare levels among nurses working in shifts and working hours in the mornings and afternoons, or as gender, nor as to whether or not they have minor children. There were no significant differences in levels of anxiety and depression among these two groups, although average levels of anxiety and depression are always higher in nurses working in shifts.
