Abstract

Based on the recognition of the relevance of maritime safety for the development of the economy within the structuring framework of the globalized economy, this study aimed to evaluate the alignment of the security and defence strategy in the European Union and in Portugal, with the stated objectives in the Union and Portugal. The study shows that in the European Union, and particularly in Portugal, the importance of the security and defence sector is recognized for the achievement of the objectives of the Integrated Maritime Policy and of the Atlantic Strategy, and therefore the Global Strategy for the European Union’s Foreign and Security Policy (EUGS) appears as a relevant contribution to those objectives. The centrality granted by the EUGS to the Atlantic particularly reinforces the security assumptions in the development of the maritime economy of the Atlantic countries, where Portugal seeks to affirm itself as a producer of safety and at the same time its great beneficiary.
