Abstract

Introduction: Edentulism is a public health issue that affects millions of people around the world. It consists of the loss of all natural permanent teeth and can happen by several factors. Goals: The main objectives are: To characterize the oral condition and the absence of dental pieces in patients who performed panoramic x-ray at the ICS - Viseu University Clinic between January and December 2017; Relate tooth loss to age, gender, and general health condition (ASA). Materials and methods : This cross-sectional epidemiological study had the clinical files of the patients who performed orthopantomography at the University Clinic of the ICS-UCP in 2017. A total of 668 clinical files were analyzed, which after the exclusion criteria (age equal to or less than 15 years) were reflected in a sample of 549. Data on gender, age, missing, lost, decayed, restored and endodontic teeth were collected. According to dental absences the arches were grouped by the Kennedy/Applegate classification. The collected data was inserted and analyzed in IBM SPSS Statistics® software for a significance level of 5%. Results: Of the 549 clinical files observed, 307 (55.9%) were women and 242 were men (44.1%), with a mean age of 44.2 years. The mean number of missing teeth per patient is 7.8 teeth. The most common type of edentulous, both in the maxilla and mandible, is Kennedy/Applegate class III. We did not find a relation with statistical significance between edentulism and gender (maxillary: p=0.318; mandibular: p=0.803). But we were able to establish this relationship with age (p=0.000). Most of the endodontic, restored, decayed and lost teeth are found in the posterior sector. Conclusions: It is important to characterize the lack of teeth of patients who go the University Clinic to understand their needs and improve oral care.
