Abstract
This paper offers a comparative analysis of the 1995 and 1999 Portuguese general elections. Using aggregate data analysis techniques (N = 275 council areas in mainland Portugal), the authors test and compare the impact of both social (cleavages) and economic factors on Portuguese electoral behaviour (participation/abstention and voting decisions) in the two elections. Before doing so they also cast an analytical eye over the election campaign and the political backdrop to the 1999 general election.
