Abstract

Despite the great advances both in the understanding and treatment of schizophrenia, there is a significant number of people suffering from this illness to still experience great difficulties in social functioning, which turn to be clear barriers to recovery. In recent years, social cognition has became a valuable construct for understanding the nature and disability of social functioning in people schizophrenia, and different studies have pointed out to its potential role in the rehabilitation of people with schizophrenia. This presentation aims to briefly contextualize the recent growth of interest in social cognition in schizophrenia, review the concept of social cognition, describe the key social cognitive domains studied in the context of schizophrenia, and the instruments used to assess them, and finally present some research challenges in this area.
