Abstract

Background: Comfort has been considered an important concept, fundamental and closely linked to nursing practice, assuming itself as a care desired result. Objective: To identify, synthesise and analyse existing knowledge about the characteristics associated with impaired comfort. Methodology: Integrative literature review based on PICo methodology. The research was carried out in EBSCO search engine, Portugal Open Access Scientific Repository, SciELO and SciELO Portugal databases, from 2009 to 2017. Results: Four articles that involved people and families who received nursing care were selected. The results showed as impaired comfort characteristics, pain, sleep deprivation, fear, fatigue, thirst, hunger, anorexia, asthenia, anxiety, recovery uncertainty, confidence deficit in professionals, reduced religious practice, changes in family, social and professional environment, daily living activities dependence, and the presence of invasive and non-invasive medical devices. Conclusion: Compared with the characteristics that define the NANDA impaired comfort diagnosis, there are other characteristics expressed in the literature that are not included in this nomenclature.
