Abstract

Every minute, three to six people in the world discover they have skin cancer. That's two to three million people a year, according to the World Health Organization. In the case of melanomas, the numbers point to 123 thousand cases, annually. In Portugal, 12 thousand new cases of skin cancer (melanomas and non-melanomas) are estimated every year. These neoplasms are the most frequent in Caucasian individuals and their incidence has increased, representing a huge burden for society, both for the impact on citizens' health and for the effort they imply in terms of direct and indirect costs for the States.
