Abstract
This article presents the diagnosis and intervention of conservation and restoration carried out on the wooden painted ceiling of the 18th century church of Our Lady of the Conception of Ulgueira (Sintra, Portugal), as well as the actions of awareness for its use and preservation. The painting, of unknown authorship, depicts the iconography of Our Lady of the Conception with characteristics of the baroque period. The research and intervention was justified by the chromatic alteration of the work, by the need to attach some boards to the ceiling support structure, and because the immunization and the disinfestation of the wood were essential. Characterization techniques were used to identify the binder, the varnish, and the metal foil. It was concluded that there is a layer of terpenic origin, which can be related to the rosin, the original varnish, and another one of acrylic nature, which can be associated with Paraloid® B72, used in a recent intervention to fix policromy.
