Abstract

The use of computers in Orthodontics speciality is essential in many aspects. There are currently several software for the electronic recording of clinical procedures in Orthodontics. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the levels of usage of some computer technologies to the study and practice of Orthodontics. An electronic questionnaire was submitted to 75 dentists/orthodontists with questions related to their personal experience in the use of computer resources and new technologies in Orthodontics. Frequency distributions were made to determine the pattern of use. 35 clinicians responded to the questionnaire, which of whom: 17 (49%) orthodontists, 14 (40%) dentists with postgraduate training in Orthodontics and 4 (11%) dentists who were studying for their own postgraduate specialization in Orthodontics. This investigation suggests that the use of computers and technology of information is common among the study clinicians. The computer applications more frequently mentioned by users were: clinical digital photography (97,1%), cephalometric computer analysis (71,4%), educational multimedia presentations (68,6%) and pratice management system software (62,9%). This research concludes that digital photography is the most used resource in Orthodontics and that exclusive pratice of Orthodontics does not seem to influence the levels of use of this digital features.
