Abstract

After evoking Eça de Queirós’s late novel, The City and the Mountains , the author writes about the rivers of Lusitania, mainly the Minho river, and their ichthyofauna, impoverished by the disappearance of the sturgeon. In fact, the last specimen was captured in 1961. Professor Raul Miguel Rosado Fernandes mentioned this sturgeon in a study on an excursion of about ten pages, written by André de Resende, called “Research on the *Asturjão” ( Disquisitio de pisce asturione , pp. 166-180). The purpose of the present study is to com - ment on the parts of the De antiquitatibus Lusitaniae where André de Resende mentions the rivers, from the South to the North of Portugal, in the light of literary tradition: Pliny the Elder ( Natural History , IV, 22, 115), Athenaeus of Naucratis ( Deipnosophistae , VIII, 331, bc), Strabo ( Geography , III, 3, 4). This results in a closer proximity between history of literature and local gastronomy.
