Abstract

The main purpose oh this work is to identify the responsibilities of nurses, during the 19th century, at Hospital de Rilhafoles, Hospital de Alienados do Conde Ferreira and at Casa de Saúde do Sagrado Coração de Jesus, assistance institutions for the alienated. These responsibilities included surveillance and the application of therapies, such as feeding, containment or hydrotherapy, having the nurses to proceed with gentleness, patience and compassion. Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing in Portugal presented a great development throughout the 20th century. However, the evolution of psychiatry in the country during the 19th century allowed nurses who were working in these assistance spaces to become precursors of that same development.
