Abstract
This article examines the challenges of implementing Quality Management Systems (QMS) in the Cultural and Creative Industries (CCI), addressing the research question: “What are the main challenges of QMS implementation in the CCI?” It highlights benefits such as enhanced productivity, efficiency, innovation, customer satisfaction, and competitive advantage, achieved through approaches like Total Quality Management, Lean Thinking, Six Sigma, ARTQUAL, knowledge management, and the integration of QFD and BSC. These strategies optimise processes and foster creativity but face risks, including high financial and temporal costs, rigidity that may stifle innovation, resistance to change, cultural misalignment, and an excessive focus on metrics. To overcome these challenges, the article recommends customising QMS, aligning it with organisational culture, investing in training, and ensuring committed leadership. The evaluation of QMS effectiveness involves performance indicators, audits, maturity models, customer feedback, and continuous improvement. The study concludes that tailored QMS enhance CCI competitiveness by balancing quality and creativity. For future research, it suggests investigating the impact of QMS implementation in the Portuguese CCI context.
