Abstract

Our theoretical framework seeks to articulate the dynamics of modernity in the European urban space and the processes of secularization, diversification and individualization of religion empirically recorded by various authors (Teixeira et al., 2022), with issues linked to the religious dimension recorded specifically amongst Nepali migrants in Lisbon's Metropolitan Region (AML). We start with a research question that seeks to ask whether the categories included in the Portuguese Census 2021 (INE, 2022) and in the "Religious Identities and Social Dynamics Survey in the AML" (Teixeira, 2019) can be applied, or not, to the Nepali migrants living in the AML. In methodological terms, we used NVIVO 11 software to qualitatively analyze the data collected from 30 sociodemographic questionnaires and 30 semi-structured interviews (1 hour and 30 minutes) with 20 1st generation Nepali migrant women and 10 2nd generation Nepali women in the AML, having specifically analyzed the religious dimension and the secularization subcategory. In addition to data from ethnographic research, participant observation and field diary. The results obtained demonstrate the diversity and religious variety of the Nepali diaspora, the practice of domestic rituals, and the overlapping of practices from different religions. The findings also demonstrate that the categories of both the 2021 Portuguese Census and the 2019 AML survey do not fully cover the Nepali migrants' religious beliefs and practices.
